International Year of Astronomy 2009

What is International Year of Astronomy?

2009 has been declared International Year of Astronomy to highlight the 400th anniversary of Galileo's first use of an astronomical telescope. International Year of Astronomy events will take place in more than 140 countries. This special year has been authorized by the International Astronomical Union and by the United Nations. Around the world, astronomy-focused organizations will be collaborating to help as many people as possible achieve their own "Galileo moments" - opportunities to explore the universe and see the wonders of the sky through a telescope, as Galileo first did 400 years ago.

How is Calgary Involved?

Calgary's International Year of Astronomy events are being coordinated, developed and delivered by our city's three leading organizations in astronomy: TELUS World of Science, The University of Calgary's Rothney Astrophysical Observatory and the Calgary Centre of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada.
