Description
“Journey to the Space Station” is a free 1-hour lecture by Bev Thirsk about her trip to Kazakhstan to watch the launch of her brother, Canadian astronaut Bob Thirsk, to the International Space Station, about his 6-month mission aboard the Station and his landing in the Soyuz capsule.
Bev will speak about what it is like to be a family member of an active astronaut, from fascinating and exciting experiences to facing the realities of a high-risk career. She shares personal stories, often humourous, of how her famous brother’s work high above Earth has affected her, afforded her new insights, and influenced her own mission in life.
Bev Thirsk is a Calgary educator. She teaches students in upper elementary and enjoys integrating space science into the classroom and being involved in space science education projects.
NOTE: This lecture is a presentation of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, Calgary Centre, as part of their series of monthly public astronomy lectures during 2010.
