Peak Night for the Perseids

Thursday, August 12 into the pre-dawn hours of August 13 is expected to be the best night to watch the annual Perseid meteor shower this year. The Moon is absent from the sky (a thin crescent Moon sets early before it gets dark) so the sky is dark all night, allowing viewers with clear skies to see lots of meteors.

However, to take advantage of those clear skies, you will need to be as far from urban lights as possible. All the meteors will appear to be streaking out of the northeastern sky, from the constellation of Perseus. But meteors can appear anywhere in the sky, so there is no special place to look and no special equipment needed. Just lie back and look up! Expect to see a meteor every minute or two.

But they are random -- so sometimes several minutes pass with no meteors then there is a flurry! Some will be very bright and leave lasting trails.
